The second lived from 1772 to 1864 and was the son of Josiah Quincy, Jr. The third was the eldest son of the second, and lived from 1802 to 1862. It was the "Junior" who was distinguished in Revolutionary times. All three were Bostonians, graduates of Harvard, lawyers and devoted to literature. He who lived from 1 772 to 1864 was member of Congress 1805-1813 and president of Harvard 1829-1845. Both he and his son occupied the Mayoralty of Boston, the former 1823-1828 the latter 1845-1849.
